Lewis Hetherington

Lead Artist

(he/him)

Who are you?

I am a playwright and director who lives in, and loves, Glasgow. I was born in Newcastle but my family are from East Kilbride and we spent every summer as kids in Argyll so I've always felt at home in the West of Scotland.

How did you get here?

I have loved theatre since my first school play in primary school. I love the collaboration, connection and sharing of stories that comes with creating live events. I've been lucky enough to work with groups all over Scotland on different creative projects, and for the last few years have been working with LGBTQIA Elders, which all started with The Coming Back Out Ball for the National Theatre of Scotland. The community that came out of the project, and the experiences we've had together are some of the best and most rewarding I've had of my personal and professional life.

What is your role with the Culture Club Collective?

Alongside Chris, we plan the monthly dance clubs, decide what dancing and other activities we might get up to. We attend the Elder led forums where they feed back or what is working (and what isn't!) so we can make sure that we are meeting the needs and desires of everyone who comes along.

What does the Culture Club Collective mean to you?

It means friendship, it means meeting extraordinary people and hearing about their incredible lives, it means solidarity, it means celebrating the lives of those who have fought so hard to create the rights that we as LGBTQIA people have, and it means a hope for better representation and rights in the future.
